Partly timber framed and plastered, partly of red brick (probably re-used) in English bond; the C12 remnant of moulded brick and stone; roofed with handmade red plain tiles. In 1216 an incident was recorded that "King John's army violently entered the abbey and carried off twenty-two horses of the bishop of London and others."
